German-born artist Karl Heinz Hansen, known as Hansen-Bahia (1915–1978), developed a powerful expressive style through woodcuts, paintings and sculptures. During the 1960s, he travelled to Ethiopia, where he taught at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts and introduced students to woodcut and graphic printmaking techniques. His encounters with Ethiopia and its people inspired a body of work depicting African subjects, including scenes of Ethiopian life and images of Dankali warriors. These works reflect his engagement with the continent and form a significant link between his artistic practice in Brazil and the development of modern printmaking in Ethiopia.
